Cookie Policy

Last updated: 8 July 2025

1. About This Policy

This Cookie Policy explains how Refute Ltd ("the Company," "we," "us," or "our") uses cookies and similar technologies on withrefute.com. It supplements our Privacy Policy and sets out your rights under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations ("PECR") and the UK GDPR.

Refute provides content authenticity scoring and coordinated-manipulation detection to enterprise brand safety teams and newsroom trust desks. Cookies on this website support secure login, session management for the platform, and where you consent, anonymous measurement of how the site is used.

2. What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They allow the site to recognise your device on subsequent visits, store session state, and where you consent, measure how visitors use the site. We also use related technologies such as local storage (used by our consent management layer to record your cookie choice).

3. Your Consent

Under PECR, we do not set non-essential cookies (analytics, preferences, or marketing) until you give your prior consent through our cookie banner. The banner appears on your first visit; you may accept all cookies or choose essential cookies only.

Strictly necessary cookies are exempt from this requirement. They are the minimum set of cookies required for the Service to function (for example, maintaining your login session and recording your consent decision itself).

You can change or withdraw your consent at any time by clicking "Cookie preferences" in the footer of any page, or by contacting us at [email protected]. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing based on consent before withdrawal.

4. Categories of Cookies We Use

The table below lists the categories of cookies set on withrefute.com:

Category Examples Lifetime Legal basis
Strictly necessary Session token, CSRF token, cookie-consent record Session to 12 months Legitimate interest / contract performance
Preferences Interface settings, theme preference Up to 12 months Consent
Analytics Self-hosted analytics, anonymised page-view and session counts Up to 13 months Consent
Marketing Not currently used N/A Consent (if introduced)

5. Third-Party Cookies

Some cookies may be set by processors acting on our behalf (for example, an analytics provider). We have written data-processing agreements with all such providers under Article 28 UK GDPR, and we enable their cookies only after you give consent via our banner. We do not permit third-party processors to use cookie data for their own commercial purposes.

6. Managing Cookies

  • Use our cookie banner to accept all cookies or restrict to essential cookies only, or click "Cookie preferences" in the page footer to reopen the banner at any time.
  • Most browsers allow you to refuse or delete cookies through their settings. Instructions are available at aboutcookies.org. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may prevent login and platform features from working correctly.
  • Where your browser transmits an opt-out signal (such as the Global Privacy Control), we honour that signal for analytics and marketing categories on sites where such signals apply.

7. Changes

If we change the cookies we use, we will update this policy and, where required under PECR, request renewed consent via the banner.
